It’s been a great weekend for SANparks and the fight against poaching, with a total of 7 arrests made, and one poacher being being taken out by our khaki cops.
Well-known strippers and sworn protectors of our fastest-dwindling natural resource, the SANparks game rangers in the Kruger park, foiled the attempts of three would-be rhino poachers over the weekend. Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi from the Limpopo police said in a statement that the poachers allegedly opened fire on the rangers, prompting the calendar boys to return fire.
One poacher was shot dead, another injured in his knee and right thigh. The third poacher fell to the charms of our boys and just gave up. The survivors were taken in, along with one hunting rifle, 11 rounds of ammunition, an axe, a knife and three cellphones. Two of the men were also wearing stolen SANparks uniforms, with the casualty wearing a Mozambican soldier’s uniform.
Meanwhile on Friday, Limpopo Police and SANparks rangers pounced on two vehicles in the Tshokwane Section of the Kruger National Park. A .375 hunting rifle, silencer, ammunition and some poachy equipment was found in the vehicles and five people were arrested on the spot. Paul Daphne of SANparks said that the successes this weekend is a result of the SAPS and SANparks’ joint operations and collaboration.
