Riots latest: Outrage as vaccination centres ‘forced to close’

It doesn’t get any more idiotic than this. Looters have now forced vaccination centres to shut their doors on Monday, as riots continue across SA.

Vaccination sites run by both Discovery and Dischem were forced into early closures on Monday, after the ongoing riots in parts of South Africa prompted the centres to end their operations ahead of schedule.

Riots force vaccination centres to close

Dischem also posted a message earlier in the day, confirming that their pharmacies, vaccination sites, and drive-through testing facilities would not be opening, and asked citizens in KZN to ‘stay safe’ as the violence continues unabated.

“Due to the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal, Dis-Chem Pharmacies, Dis-Chem Vaccination Sites and Dis-Chem Drive Through Testing Stations in the area will be closed today. We appreciate your patience and apologise for any inconvenience.”

Looting, unrest disrupts vaccination programme

Discovery followed suit in the afternoon, citing ‘civil unrest’ in KZN and Gauteng as the primary reason they had to call time early on their jabbing schedules. The group is yet to decide if it will reopen on Tuesday.

Can calm be restored in South Africa

The mindless decision to target vaccination centres will leave a sour taste in the mouths of millions across South Africa. The shots which will protect us all from the onslaught of COVID-19 are an invaluable resource, and any actions that compromise the administration of these jabs serve as a slap in the face to us all.

With President Ramaphosa addressing the nation on Monday, it is hoped that normality will be restored at some point this week. But, as it stands, South Africa remains at the mercy of those hellbent on prolonging these riots.
