Report LOTTO scams, says the South African Government.

An important address to citizens calls out criminals, including those who run advance-fee fraud and lottery scams.

If you get an SMS claiming that you’ve won the LOTTO, you might have fallen victim to criminals. The National Lottery doesn’t send messages to their winners, according to official lottery FAQ resources.

The South African Government encourages citizens to report fraud and lottery scams.

LOTTO scams claim that someone has won the lottery, or that you have to click on a link to claim your winnings. Some scams will ask people for personal information, which is later used for identity fraud or other crimes.

Shutting down lottery scams, could save investigation time – and help someone.

If you suspect a lottery scam, report it to The South Africa Police Service (SAPS) for investigation.

You could be saving someone else their identity – or their money!

SAPS and LOTTO scams

The SAPS has urged all citizens to remain alert, especially when doing online transactions (or answering messages).

Online shopping, dating, and playing the lottery could put you on a scammer’s map.

If you suspect that you’re being scammed, do the right thing and contact SAPS.

If you’re wondering: authentic lottery wins can be confirmed with the National Lottery – obviously, scams can’t.
