Parking an SUV in Paris just got a lot more expensive. As reported by CAR Magazine UK, a referendum in the ‘city of love’ voted to increase parking costs three-fold for SUVs and heavy vehicles.

Encouraged as a way to reduce congestion and therefore greenify the city, parking a large SUV for six hours in central Paris will cost €225 (R4500). At that sort of expense, all of a sudden a R10 note for the South African car guard doesn’t seem so bad, now does it?

Anne Hidalgo, the Parisian mayor, launched ‘les 4×4 de ville’ this week. And 55% of residents voted overnight for tripling the cost of parking an SUV in the city. Any car weighing more than 1 600 kg will have to pay the higher parking cost. Naturally, these include most SUVs and any other heavy vehicles. The cost is €18 (R370) for the first hour, rising to €225 (R4500) for six hours.

Cleverly, most French brands focus on lightweight construction, so this weight limit excludes most Citroens, Peugeots and Renaults. Interestingly, the new law applies only to combustion-engined cars and hybrids. Electric vehicles, which are heavier due to their batteries, have a higher weight limit of 2 000 kg.

Parisians with resident parking permits are exempt in their neighborhood. Disabled drivers, health workers, tradesmen and taxi drivers are also exempt from the new parking charges.
