EDUCATION AND RICH MEDICAL HISTORY

The obituary read:

The people’s doctor was born at Saint Aidens Hospital in Durban 1955. He grew up in Sparks Road,
attended Centenary High and proceeded to the then University of Durban Westville where he completed the Big 4 finishing in the top 3 of his class which awarded him the opportunity to transfer straight into 2nd-year Medical School at UKZN, graduating class of 1979.
He completed his medical internship in 1980 at Maccords Zulu Hospital in Durban, he then went on to do volunteer community service at Charles Johnston Memorial Hospital in Nqutu, KZN from 1981-1982. He then joined King Edward Hospital from 1983-1984 and moved on to RK Khans Hospital in 1985 until he left the state in 1998 when he moved to Kimberley to open up his private practice which he ran until the 24th December 2022
Dr. Pillay’s quest for self-development was inextricably linked with that of seeing his people freed from the clutches of Apartheid in pursuit of human progress for all.

“Throughout his tertiary education days, detention and police harassment did not deter him from political activism and undertaking dangerous assignments as an underground operative aligned with the African National Congress.”
