A well-known South African lawyer has been barred from legal practice, after he was found guilty in a recent fraud case. Brian Bauman orchestrated a plot to swindle thousands out of his clients.

Who is ‘the lawyer swindler’?

The abhorrent attorney conducted a scam that saw his victims cough up more than R62 800 between them. He exploited the Road Accident Fund, promising clients that they would benefit financially if they secured his services.

Alas, this proved to be an enormous falsehood. The court ruled that Bauman was guilty, and ordered him to pay back the loot he had successfully squeezed out of his unsuspecting targets.

The size of this particular scam is on a relatively modest scale. Brian Bauman often took ‘hundreds of rand at a time’ from his victims, but over an extended period, he managed to amass something similar to a small fortune.

  • SAPS issued a statement on the matter over the weekend:

“Court has ordered the attorney, Brian Albertus Bauman, to hand over more than R62 800 allegedly stolen from his clients who were meant to benefit from the Road Accident Fund (RAF). He was further struck off the roll of attorneys, after he allegedly fleeced clients out of hundreds of rands.”
