POPCRU angered by unabated murder of police officers in SA

POPCRU has accused the SAPS of failing to come up with solutions to curb police murders as they continue unabated.

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) says it is extremely angered by the continued and unabated murder of police officers in the country.

This comes as two police officers were gunned down in separate incidents in the Western Cape on Sunday, 11 June.

POPCRU WEIGHS IN ON POLICE MURDERS

According to the police union on Monday morning, Constables Foyle, Mayiya, Maliwa and Mbiza were also attacked outside the Junction Mall in Nyanga while on their way to perform their duties. They are thus far receiving medical attention.

POPCRU has blamed the South African Police Service (SAPS) for failing to come up with a plan to curb police murders.

To date, the number of police officers killed since the beginning of the year amounts to 13, with multiple others having suffered from career-threatening injuries and are left disabled, according to the union.

POPCRU spokesperson Richard Mamabolo said the randomness and apparent targeting of police officers, on or off duty, has inevitably increased members’ feelings of unsafety and insecurity.

Mamabolo said it is a clear sign that officers are being singled out as targets for attacks for their firearms which are later utilised to perpetuate further criminal activities.

NEGLECTED VICTIMS

Earlier this year, the police union said SAPS members consider themselves forgotten and neglected victims; the authorities, in particular, their organisation, do not care about their safety and security and fail to do anything concrete about the situation.
