Police officer and family ambushed and shot dead in Port Edward

Police officer, Roger Mavundla was shot dead together with his wife and two children. One child is reportedly being treated in hospital.

A KwaZulu-Natal police officer, Warrant Officer, Roger Mavundla and three family members, including his ten year old daughter have been shot dead.

The incident reportedly happened on Saturday, 21 January while Mavundla, his wife and children aged between ten and 17 were inside their vehicle.

POLICE OFFICER AND FAMILY SHOT DEAD

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the 49-year-old officer and his family were ambushed and shot at, while inside their vehicle.

The officer, his wife and two children sustained fatal wounds and died on the scene while a third child is currently being treated at a local hospital.

At least 22 SAPS members have been killed between July and September 2022 alone.

National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola together with Police Minister, Bheki Cele and SAPS management are expected to visit Port Edward on Tuesday, 24 January following the gruesome murder.

Police Ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba said the visit will see the provincial SAPS brief the ministry on crime patterns in the policing area and interventions in place to deal with violent crime and other contact crimes.

“The visit will also include a comfort visit to the Mavundla family home,” she said.

ANOTHER SAPS MEMBER MURDERED

In a separate incident, on New Year’s Day, 52-year-old Warrant Officer Ntshidi Marutla was disarmed of his service pistol and fatally stabbed during a stop and search operation in Rosettenville, Gauteng.

Another member was stabbed and was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Within hours of the crime, one male suspect was linked to the crime scene and arrested by members of the Johannesburg Central Police Station. He was discovered with the murder weapon and the deceased member’s service pistol.

Marutla who worked at the Moffatview Police Station had 30 years of service with the organization, having joined in 1992.
