A dairy farmer in KwaZulu-Natal was forced to dump a full day’s worth of milk of more than 12 000 litres due to load shedding.

WATCH AS THE THOUSANDS OF LITRES OF MILK IS DUMPED

The frustrated farmer took to social media to share videos of the devastation caused by the load shedding.

According to reports, issues with low voltage ultimately cost the farm 11 800 litres of milk, but this was just part of a constant battle with load shedding that has driven up costs and is burning out farm equipment.

This comes a week after more than 10 million chicks had to be culled in the last six weeks. At the same time, power supply disruptions left more than 40 000 of broiler chickens dead in the North West.

According to media reports, the farmer Herman du Preez will sue the power utility for more than R2 million in damages and losses.

According to media reports, the South African Poultry Association fears the country will soon face a chicken shortage. 

MILLIONS OF CHICKS CULLED DIE TO LOAD SHEDDING

The South African Poultry Association said its members had to cull more than 10 million day-old chicks in the last six weeks. 

The chicks cannot be slaughtered because of prolonged load shedding and the risk of salmonella.

FEARS THAT THE COUNTRY MIGHT FACE A CHICKEN SHORTAGE

In December 2022, KFC closed some of its restaurants because of a severe chicken shortage caused by load shedding. If load shedding doesn’t stop, the same thing will happen to other restaurants and stores in the coming weeks.
