A statement from SAPS Colonel Moatshe’ Ngoepe has detailed how a special task force has made progress in taking on farm attacks, house robberies and carjackings in Polokwane.

The joint task team led by Saps Polokwane Cluster Commander Major General Sam Mokgonyana carried out an intense manhunt for suspects involved in a farm attack.

“Three suspects aged between 22 and 25 years were arrested through a tip-off from members of the Community.

The suspects will appear before the Seshego and Polokwane Magistrates Courts respectively on Monday on various offences ranging from house robberry ,attempted murder to possession of firearms and ammunition and suspected stolen properties.”

A group of armed suspects attacked a house in Leeukuil Plot in the Westernburg policing area outside Polokwane on Thursday night.

The plot owner reportedly heard his dogs barking and went out to investigate. He then came across two armed men walking outside his house.

“He took his rifle and fired a warning shot and the suspects ran away. It is alleged they later came back shortly and started to shoot randomly into the house, damaging the glass door. The owner then fired back and subsequently, one suspect aged around 30’s was fatally shot. The other suspects ran away and disappeared in the bushes.”

The suspects were then cornered outside Polokwane in a rented house. Shots were fired back and forth after the suspects noticed the police and opened fire. One suspect was shot and all three in the house were arrested.

The police recovered the following items from inside the house.

* 03 x firearms.
* 24 x cell phones.
* 01 x sports bicycle
* 01 x Mercedes Benz key.
* 03 x Plasma TV’s.
* 01 x Laptop, 05 x speakers, 04 x DVD players, 04 x spotlights
* 02 x Digital cameras
* 01 x Cooler bag full of workshop material
* 06 x pairs of shoes (takkies)
* 01 x Refrigerator (KIC)
* 01 x Identification document

SAPS say that the men arrested are linked to more than 20 cases in that part of the province, “especially in the Seshego, Westerburg and Polokwane Policing areas”.

Let’s hope the good work by these units strike fear into would be farm attackers across the country.
