Two men, alleged to have been robbery suspects, have been killed following a shootout with police at the cargo warehouse at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday 18 July. Seven suspects were arrested and police recovered stolen cargo and five firearms.

South African Police Service (SAPS) Colonel Brenda Muridili confirmed the incident, calling it an armed robbery.

“It’s alleged that suspects robbed the cargo warehouse at the airport and tied up the staff,” she said.

The manager of the warehouse noticed employees lying on the floor and immediately notified the police and airport security.

“SAPS and airport control room were alerted and the K9 team and SAPS arrived and engaged the suspects wherein two lost their lives, 2 seriously injured and several arrested with the truck of goods,” she added.

According to Muridili, police and airport security chased after the suspects’ truck and bakkie which had just left the warehouse.

“A high-speed chase and shootout resulted. Subsequently, seven suspects were arrested, four of them with gunshot wounds while two more suspects were shot dead. A civilian in the vicinity sustained a gunshot wound apparently by a stray bullet,” she said.

The police, upon searching the suspects’ truck recovered the stolen personal protective equipment (masks) as well as three crates containing cellphones.

“The SAPS and Airport Security’s swift response to the robbery is proof of the effective collaborative security measures that have been put in place at the airport,” added Muridili.

According to ER24, paramedics along with other services, arrived at OR Tambo shortly before 14:00 to find several local authorities already in attendance.

On closer inspection, paramedics found several men, believed to be robbery suspects, lying inside and outside the premises.

“Paramedics quickly assessed the patients and found that two men had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Nothing could be done for them, and they were declared dead,” said ER24 said in a statement.

According to ER24, seven other men were assessed and found to have sustained gunshot wounds, leaving them with moderate to serious injuries following the incident at OR Tambo.

“The patients were treated for their injuries and transported under the supervision of local authorities to a nearby hospital. The details surrounding this incident are not yet known, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” it added.

The arrested suspects will be appearing at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of armed robbery.
