The man who recently sold an assault weapon to Payton Gendron, the 18-year-old man arrested in connection with the racially motivated mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.

Gendron entered the Tops Friendly Market on Saturday, dressed in tactical gear and opened fire. At least 13 people were shot at – 11 of whom are Black and two were White.

Officials say the supermarket is located in the heart of Buffalo’s Black community.

News of the hate crime has been met with utter shock, including from law enforcement officers, government officials and President Joe Biden. New York Mayor Kathy Hochul also condemned the mass shooting, saying in part: “It strikes us in our very hearts to know that there’s such evil that lurks out there. This individual – this white supremacist – who just perpetrated a hate crime on an innocent community, will spend the rest of his days behind bars. And heaven help him in the next world as well.”

Now, Robert Donald, whom Gendrom purchased the weapon from, told The New York Times he learned from federal agents about the shooting – and not in the news.

“I knew nothing about it until I got the call from them. I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

Gendron previously said in a 180-page manifesto that he planned to use a Bushmaster XM-15 in his assault. Donald, who runs Vintage Firearms in Endicott, New York, said he didn’t remember anything specific about the sale as he serves a lot of people.

Gendron is said to have modified the firearm to make it more lethal. Donald said the weapon was legally compliant when sold.

“Even with all of those safety features on it — which is the only way I sell it — any gun can be easily modified if you really want to do it,” he said.
