Naledi Local Municipality Mayor Neo Schalk killed in head-on accident on N14

The Mayor of the Naledi Local Municipality, Neo Schalk, was killed in a head-on accident on the N14 just outside Vryburg on Sunday.

Naledi Local Municipality Mayor Neo Schalk was killed in a head-on accident on N14 just outside Vryburg on Sunday. 

THE FATAL ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON THE N14 ON SUNDAY MORNING

Department of Community Safety and Transport Management spokesperson, Boitshoko Moremi said the accident happened on Sunday morning. 

“According to the police report the mayor’s vehicle was involved in a head-on collision on N14 just outside Vryburg. Both the Mayor and the driver of another vehicle were certified dead at the scene of the accident.” 

The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari send his deepest condolences to the family of Schalk. 

The Naledi Local Municipality serves Vryburg and Stella respectively, among other areas. 

Lehari described Schalk as a foot soldier.

“In the many joint law enforcement operations that we held in Vryburg, Mayor Schalk was always there. He would actively participate, imploring road users to obey the rules of the road.

“I am saddened by his untimely death, especially at the time we are preparing for local Government elections.”

Lehari said a visit to his family was planned for later this week. 

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the council.”

Last month the City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Councillor Jolidee Matongo was on his way home from Soweto when he was killed in an accident in Lenasia.

Mayoral spokesperson Phindile Chauke said Matongo was returning from work in Soweto to encourage voters to register to vote in the upcoming Local Government Elections 2021 alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa and Gauteng David Makura.

“Mayor Matongo was travelling with two of his VIP protectors at the time of the accident. Both protectors sustained injuries.”
