The latest police crime stats have painted a gruesome picture of the current murder trends in the country with nearly 7000 in just 90 days.

MURDER BY NUMBERS

This is according to the second quarter crime stats released by Police minister Bheki Cele on Friday.

In the three months between July and September this year, 6945 people were killed which equates to 77 murders daily.

Compared to the same period last year, it is a slight drop from 7004, a difference of 59.

Of the 6945 murders during the reporting period, 881 were women while 293 were
children.

Gauteng recorded highest number of murders with 1625 people killed, 46 more deaths than the same period last year.

It is closely followed by KwaZulu-Natal despite a drop of 254 murders, with 1603 reported.

While the Eastern Cape comes third with 1312.

“It remains encouraging that the KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo provinces reported
double-digit percentage decreases in their murder rates. This is despite KZN experiencing numerous mass shootings, claiming three or more lives at a time”, says Cele.

3106 of the 6945 murders were as a result of a firearm.

In Gauteng it accounted for 884 of its murders, 796 in KwaZulu-Natal and 634 in the Western Cape.

While in the Eastern Cape lead in the number of murders committed using a knife with 233 murders.
