MK Party claims to have 4 million members, but the numbers don’t add up …

The newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party has risen in popularity since its launch earlier this month, with millions of South Africans visiting the party’s membership website.

The launch of the new party coincided with the 62nd anniversary of the African National Congress’ military wing with the same name.

The MK Party has already received the backing of former president Jacob Zuma who announced his support of the party instead of the ruling ANC whom he served for over six decades.

As reported by The South African website, on 18 December, just two days after the launch of the party, one million people had reportedly signed up to join the party.

The latest report, according to Goolam on X, formerly known as Twitter, the MK Party now boasts four million members.

Goolam, posting under the handle @goolammv with nearly 80 000 followers, added that for a person to become a member, an online form needs to be filled out.

Thereafter, a minimum of R10 needs to be paid into a Standard Bank account, the banking details of which are provided on the website.

Goolam did the maths and pointed out that if indeed there were four million members, that would equate to R40 million in the bank account listed.

However, according to a source, that account only has R171 000 in it, which suggests the MK Party’s member numbers are closer to 17 100 than four million …

Meanwhile, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party will officially launch in January 2024 at Soweto’s Orlando Stadium.

According to the SABC website, this was revealed in a letter penned by the party’s National Coordinator, Lotta Mayana, to the party’s ground forces.

The letter to MK’s party’s ground forces comes a day after the African National Congress (ANC) sent a letter demanding that the party by Friday, 29 December cease the use of the name uMkhonto weSizwe or any other name which is similar to the ANC’s uMkhonto we Sizwe, or else face legal action.
