Minister Zizi Kodwa wishes Bafana Bafana success in AFCON journey to Côte d’Ivoire, expressing support for the national football team.

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister, Zizi Kodwa, has conveyed his well-wishes to the South African national football team, Bafana Bafana, as they embark on their journey to Côte d’Ivoire for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Minister Kodwa expressed confidence in the team’s ability to make the nation proud and urged them to raise the South African flag high during the competition.

In a social media post on X, the Minister emphasised the significance of the team carrying the hopes and aspirations of the entire nation.

“I have no doubt that you will make us proud in the tournament and raise the South African flag high. You carry the hopes and aspirations of the nation. I look forward to seeing you in Côte d’Ivoire ahead of your first game against Mali,” said the Minister.

Bafana Bafana left Johannesburg for Abidjan on Thursday, establishing their residence in the CAN Village in Korhogo from Friday onwards.

The departure followed a training match against Lesotho at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Tshwane, where the teams played to a goalless draw. The match served as preparation for the AFCON tournament, scheduled to take place from 13 January to 11 February 2024.

Bafana Bafana coach updates on injuries

Addressing concerns about injuries within the team, Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos, provided insights into the current status of key players.

Captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is under medical supervision due to a knee issue, midfielder Themba Zwane suffered a knee knock, and Mothobi Mvala is managing a groin injury.

“Mvala is still part of this team for now. I will not rule him out or think further until I have the full medical details from the team doctor. He is still a part of the AFCON-bound team. Mvala is the type of player that gives everything, both during a match and in practice,” Broos said in a statement issued by the South African Football Association (SAFA).
