The rapidly growing concerns over veteran Springbok and Sharks prop Coenie Oosthuizen’s playing future following a serious neck injury has now turned to all out panic.

According to an article by Rapport, the Sharks reportedly fear for the worst when it comes to the extend of prop Oosthuizen’s injury, which is now threatening to upend his entire playing career.

“It looks serious,” a source is quoted by the Sunday newspaper.

The 30-Test scrummager last featured for the Durbanites against the Lions on 2 March in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. Despite inquiries by Rapport, the 35-year-old remains silent about his status.

Oosthuizen is one of the most experienced campaigner still active in South African rugby, but his age and injury history raise doubts about his return. Previous setbacks for the former Cheetahs and Sale Sharks powerhouse include a previous neck injury in 2012 and a string of injuries in 2017.

The Springbok player’s long-time injury, is just one of many that has contributed to the Sharks’ downfall in the season’s United Rugby Championship campaign.

The Sharks are currently 12th on the 16-team URC log after suffering 12 defeats in their 16 round-robin games of the season, which includes an agonising last-gasp 25-24 loss to Benetton this past Saturday.
