According to The Guardian, Meghan Markle filed a formal complaint with ITV, following the disparaging remarks made about her by Good Morning Britain host, Piers Morgan.

This follows after Morgan stepped down from his role as show host this week. During his segment, Morgan said that he didn’t believe Markle was suicidal, adding he wouldn’t believe her “if she read the weather report”.

“I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she says. I wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report”.

Piers Morgan can’t take the heat

On Tuesday, Morgan also barged off stage when co-host Alex Beresford quite calmly told Morgan that he had to back down. Morgan didn’t want to hear it and walked off stage.

He mumbled: “Okay, I’m done with this. Sorry, no sorry, […] See you later. Sorry, can’t do this”. When he left, Beresford continued: “That is absolutely diabolical behaviour”.

“I’m sorry, but Piers spouts off on a regular basis, and we all have to sit there and listen”.

According to The Guardian, Markle contacted ITV over Morgan’s insensitivity towards mental health and how his comments could affect the conversation around the topic in the UK.

A formal complaint was allegedly lodged, and by Tuesday evening, Ofcom confirmed that more than 41 000 complaints were received, relating to Morgan’s behaviour.

The broadcaster confirmed that it would launch an investigation to determine if Morgan’s comments went against the UK broadcasting code relating to harm and offence. ITV has since released the following statement:

“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain. ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add”.

Mental health charity applauds Meghan Markle

Following Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, mental health charity Mind issued a statement explaining they were “disappointed and concerned to see Piers Morgan’s comments on not believing Meghan’s experiences about suicidal thoughts”.

“It’s vital that when people reach out for support or share their experiences of ill mental health that they are treated with dignity, respect and empathy.”

The charity confirmed that their team “are in conversation with ITV about this” and urged members who might be affected by the conversation to reach out for support”.

The charity also applauded Markle for speaking out about her experience, saying that opening up is difficult. Still, it goes a long way to break down the stigma around mental health issues.

Sharon Osbourne sides with Morgan

At the other end of the spectrum, television personality Sharon Osbourne sided with Morgan. Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne had been friends with Morgan for years. Osbourne tweeted:

“[Piers Morgan], I am with you. I stand by you. People forget that you’re paid for your opinion and that you’re just speaking your truth”.
