The Matric Class of 2023 achieved an overall 82.9% pass rate which is an improvement from the 80.1% achieved in 2022. Here are the best-performing districts in the country.

BEST-PERFORMING DISTRICTS IN SOUTH AFRICA

The Gauteng province is known for producing excellent results and it is no surprise that three of its best-performing districts were among the Top 10 in the country. KwaZulu-Natal which ranked second nationally with a pass rate of 86.4% also has four districts in the Top 10.

  • Johannesburg West – Gauteng (92.5%)
  • Motheo – Free State (91.2%)
  • Tshwane South – Gauteng (90.4%)
  • Umkhanyakude – KwaZulu-Natal (90%)
  • Fezile Dabi – Free State (89.6%)
  • Ugu – KwaZulu-Natal (89.5%)
  • Thabo Mafutsanyana – Free State (89.4%)
  • Ilembe – KwaZulu-Natal – (88.6%)
  • Gauteng North – Gauteng – 88.4%)
  • Zululand – KwaZulu-Natal (87.2%)

MATRIC CLASS OF 2023 RESULTS RELEASED

According to the Department of Basic Education a total of 715 719 full-time and 182 056 part-time candidates registered to sit for the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams. This translates to a final total of close to 900 000 candidates writing the examination.

The official pass rate for the class of 2023 was 82.9% which is up from 80.1% in 2022. Motshekga was pleased to announce that all provinces had pass rates above the 70% mark.

Free State is the leading province with 89% (for five years in a row) and is surprisingly followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 86.4%.
