In the past 24 hours, a Twitter war has been brewing between Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba and the Gauteng Province MEC for Human Settlements, Lebohang Mallie.

Who cooked the beef?

The ANC filed a motion of no confidence against Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba on 12 August. The party further announced that the council’s programming committee had accepted its request for a motion of no confidence against Mashaba, and a date has been set for 22 August 2019.

The party accused him of bringing financial ruin to the city and wants to have him removed, all of this was claimed by the ruling party despite Mashaba’s recent attempts at cleaning up the city of gold.

It gets messier: Mallie vs Mashaba

Mec Lebohang Mallie took to Twitter and blasted Mahsaba claiming that: “We don’t play with clowns we will attend to you systematically and expose your lies bloody demagogue.” Mallie claimed that Mahsaba made “unfounded allegations” against his beloved ANC.

His rant further went on:

“You challenge me to place the city under administration because you have messed up, give me answers and I’ll make that call. You will not tell me when to attend to you. Start by responding to all my questions, including the appointment of managers without concurrence.”

Herman Mashaba: “I sleep fine, I didn’t steal it from vulnerable residents”

Mashaba did not let that one slide, the mayor fought back and stated Mallie and his cronies have been using the City of Johannesburg’s funds to further inject their “blessing activities”. The mayor was polite and said he is trying to “clean up” their mess since his position allows him to do so.

In a thread of tweets, these South African leaders didn’t rest as they went back and forth. Mashaba further announced: “I sleep fine. I made my own money. I didn’t steal it from vulnerable residents. I’m ready to answer you nana.”

The DA continues to have its’ mayors back

The Democratic Alliance quickly jumped on the bandwagon and created a #HandsOffMashaba hashtag, and introduced a petition that needs 100 000 signatures to help keep Mashaba as Johannesburg mayor.

“Since Mayor Mashaba launched the anti-corruption unit over two years ago, to uncover corrupt activities inherited from the ANC-led City of Johannesburg’s old office 5,335 cases have been investigated.”

South Africans poured out their support to the issue on social media. Some were rooting for the ANC led hashtag #MashabaMustGo others opted for the new founded #HandsOffMashaba.
