At least 37 cats have been brutally killed in Manenberg, Cape Town, over the last few weeks. On 13 August, the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS) revealed that autopsy results from Western Cape Government’s Veterinary Laboratory confirmed what they suspected all along – that humans were involved in the cat killings.

The autopsy results also revealed that most of the mutilation of the cat bodies took place after the animals were beaten to death. The horrific nature of the killings led to speculation that the cats could have been butchered as part of some religious ritual. The South African Satanic Church came out on Monday and distanced itself from the cat killings.

SA SATANIC CHURCH DENIES INVOLVEMENT IN CAT KILLINGS

The SA Satanic Church said it is shocked and appalled by the events in Manenberg, where at least 37 cats have been killed.

The AWS has been after the suspects behind the killings for weeks but little progress has been made despite the reward for information on the killer(s) being upped to R7000 last week. The cat bodies continue to pile up and the manner in which most of them are killed follow the same modus operandi – they are beaten to death and then have their organs removed with a sharp blade.

“The general public still associates rituals involving animals with Satanism. This is mainly due to misconceptions spread through the Satanic Panic,” said the SA Satanic Church’s Riaan Swiegelaar and Adri Norton on Monday, 16 August.

“We as the South African Satanic Church do not condone any abuse or slaughter of animals. This goes against Satanism, as well as satanic philosophy. None of our rituals require the slaughter of any living being,” said Swiegelaar and Norton.

R10 000 REWARD OFFERED

The representatives said the satanic church had a meeting on Monday morning and decided to allocate R10 000 towards a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the Manenberg cat serial killer.

Swiegelaar and Norton said the safety and protection of animals “are of the utmost importance” as their religion’s philosophy calls for animals to be held in the highest regard.
