Three suspects were arrested in Umkomaas, KwaZulu-Natal for possession of stolen property after they were caught in possession of dozens of SASSA and Easy Pay cards on Friday, 3 June.

SUSPECTS CAUGHT WITH DOZENS OF SASSA CARDS

A security guard at an ATM in Roseneath, Umkomaas saw two women and a man acting suspiciously at the teller and decided to stand in the queue and watch them.

When the suspects became aware of the guard’s presence they fled the scene in a vehicle. The security guard had seen them using numerous SASSA and bank cards to withdraw cash.

“Police officers from Umkomaas SAPS were contacted and the vehicle was monitored. The suspects moved to another ATM and the vehicle was spotted in the parking lot,” said South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala.

The suspects were seen withdrawing and transferring money at the ATM and when they returned to their vehicle the police were waiting.

The suspects – aged between 25 and 45 – were caught in possession of 50 SASSA cards, 20 Easy Pay cards and R34 000 in cash.

Gwala said it was established that the trio had transferred R360 000 into a private bank account. The suspects were arrested and detained on a charge of possession of stolen property and more charges are expected to follow.

The trio is due in the Scottsburgh Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 June.
