The Legal Practice Council (LPC) has confirmed that former defence lawyer in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Malesela Teffo (formerly known as Advocate Teffo) is still struck off the roll of legal practitioners.

The council said Teffo’s status has not changed since September 2022 when he was struck off the roll.

MALESELA TEFFO IS STILL DISBARRED

Teffo was disbarred on 16 September 2022 as he was accused of misconduct and misappropriation of funds by a number of clients who complained that despite paying he never rendered services.

The clients had complained to the Legal Practice Council before he even represented accused 1 – 4 in the Meyiwa murder trial. In fact, his conduct at the soccer star’s murder trial was not considered in this matter.

The LPC said it is aware of Teffo’s conduct at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria some of which was captured in the media including social media, which culminated the Presiding Judge in the Meyiwa murder trial, Tshifhiwa Maumela to order for his removal in court.

“The LPC confirms that it is proceeding with the contempt of court application, which is scheduled for hearing on 23 May 2023,” the council said in a statement.

On Thursday, 18 May Teffo told the court that he was a watching brief on behalf of Senzo’s brother Sifiso Meyiwa and further addressed the court. Judge Maumela then ordered for him to be removed from the court as he was disturbing the proceedings.

This was not the first time Teffo had to be kicked out of court; when the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial resumed on the 2nd of May, he delayed proceedings as he demanded to see Maumela saying he has sensitive information that cannot be shared in an open court.
