A pack of lions, perhaps just wanting to grind their teeth a bit, left visitors stranded for several days at the Kgalagadi Park after the big cats slashed 11 tyres of their four cars.

LOOK AS THE LIONS SLASHED THE CAR TYRES

According to a report by Netwerk24, Frans van Rooyen of the Kgalagadi cross-border park said another group of visitors lost seven tires due to the lions who feast so well on the car tyres.

“It’s just something that happens in the park. It’s inevitable here in the wild west,” he joked.

He said park staff changed the tyres on Wednesday morning after the tyres were delivered from Upington.

The Gharagab game camp is located about eight hours from the park’s gate at Tweerivieren.

Van Rooyen said at least the visitors were not angry and were very happy that the park’s staff assisted them.

“They see the incident as part of the experience of visiting the park.”

On Tuesday, Henk Lamprecht posted the Facebook group Kgalagadi Sightings that his daughter and her friend were stranded in the Gharagab game camp after lions got at their car tyres.

SEVERAL PEOPLE SHARED THEIR EXPERIENCES AND HOME REMEDIES TO KEEP LIONS AWAY

It elicited a tremendous response; people shared their experiences and home remedies with lion repellents. Some suggest that thorn branches should be wrapped around the tyres, while others have sprayed cleaning products such as Handy Andy or insecticides such as Doom on the tyres.

Lee Rossouw said she sprayed peppermint oil on their tyres.

IT IS BELIEVED LIONS DO NOT LIKE THE SMELL OF PEPPERMINT OIL

“We were in Gharagab for three nights a week ago, and we each sprayed peppermint oil on the tyres as well as on the sand in front of the tyres. Apparently, they and the mice don’t like the smell.”
