London leads Top Ten of expat voter registrations

As South African expats prepare to take to the polls, voter registration numbers show how 20 years of democracy are celebrated around the world

London leads Top Ten of expat

REGISTRATION numbers at the South African High Commission in London for the 2014 national elections lead the vote abroad worldwide with 9,863 official registrations. South Africans are expected to come to the High Commission on Trafalgar Square from all directions in the UK next Wednesday – despite looming tube strikes threatening to spoil transportation links in the capital.

In fact none of the other South African High Commissions, embassies and consulates around the world have managed to attract anything like the registration numbers that South Africans in the UK have dedicated themselves to, proving the healthy state of South Africa’s democracy 20 years after the fall of apartheid to the rest of the globe.

However, despite this diligent level of participation in South Africa’s democratic process, the turnout rate in registration numbers could have been much higher in theory.

We have compiled a list of the top ten registration numbers at consular representations around the world:

1. London 9,863
2. Dubai 1,539
3. Canberra 1,243
4. Kishasa 773
5. The Hague 667
6. New York 604
7. Qatar 557
8. Abu Dhabi 540
9. Dublin 466
10. Khartoum 458
