The demise of South African Airways (SAA) may be coming to a drawn-out conclusion. The national airline has had to cancel a large number of flights for the second time in two months, as the cash crisis intensifies on Tuesday. Disgruntled customers are now desperate to secure refunds and rebook their journeys.

SAA flight cancellations – latest news and updates:

Earlier in the day, Flight Centre confirmed there would be disruptions “to a number of flights”. We’re also expecting a statement to be released by the carrier at some point on Tuesday, further clarifying the matter.

The SOE badly needs a business rescue loan to drag themselves out of the hole – until next time, anyway. The Treasury is reluctant to release the funds immediately, as it needs guarantees that the money will be spent in an efficient manner which guarantees the safety and security of all planned flights.

South African Airways wants roughly R2 billion to pull itself through. But there may not be “another chance” for the ailing airline. It’s believed that 19 flights have been cancelled by SAA on Tuesday, on both the domestic and international schedules. Flight Aware have confirmed the following cancellations:

South African Airways: What do I do if my flight is cancelled?

The disruption is likely to scupper travel plans for thousands of customers. Spare a thought for those who thought they were travelling to Tanzania, Zambia or Germany later today – these longer flights have also been canned, alongside planes heading between Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

If you’ve been affected by the abject chaos that has engulfed South African Airways, there are four main things you need to know when it comes to securing a refund or a rescheduled flight ticket:

  • The airline is still obliged to move passengers to alternative airlines if the worst happens and they go bust.
  • Alternatively, passengers on the cancelled flights can apply for a refund. Cancellation fees sometimes apply, though.
  • You’ll either receive repayment of the full airfare or the cost of one ticket, depending on whether you’ve started your journey or not:
  • Assistance will be provided to all ticketed customers holding a South African Airways ticket only through any SAA Contact Centre, City Ticket Office or dedicated Travel Agent. You can contact the Johannesburg office on +27 11 978 1111 or 0861 606 606. Non-South African customers can get in touch here.
