A crime of an utterly abhorrent nature has repulsed locals in Limpopo, after a young girl succumbed to the injuries she received as the victim of a brutal gang rape in Serageng Village, Nebo. Boitumelo Matsekoleng was attacked two weeks ago, but sadly passed away on Tuesday evening.

Limpopo gang rape death – who are the suspects?

We understand that a 34-year-old male named Charlie Motswathupa has appeared in the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, on suspicion of arranging the kidnapping, rape and eventual killing of the six-year-old. In another sickening twist, Motswathupa was previously arrested for the alleged murder and rape of two-year-old Samsom Sithole last week.

What we know about the gang rape victim

Matsekoleng was in the ICU unit at Pietersburg Provincial Hospital for the past two weeks. The girl was reported missing on 29 September in the Nebo policing area, outside Groblersdal. After the neighbourhood organised an extensive search, she was found in a terrible condition and rushed to hospital. Sadly, she wasn’t able to overcome her injuries.

The disgusting revelations tumbling out of Limpopo this week have left many regional officials dumbfounded. Another male suspect has been taken into custody for this issue, after his local community learned of the accusations and thoroughly assaulted him. Police arrived to take the man and place him in a prison cell.

Limpopo politicians left apoplectic

DA Limpopo Spokesperson on Community Safety Katlego Phala has expressed her sincere condolences to the family, slamming “toxic masculinity” in the process. A palpable anguish can be felt in the statement released earlier on Thursday, and the MPL is calling for the “full might of the law” to take its course:

“Her death will surely be a loss to the entire society and displays the toxic masculinity women must navigate on a daily basis. This incident continues to highlight the vulnerability of women in our societies especially in rural areas and the failure by our government to keep women safe.”

“We condemn the cruel and inhumane manner the young girl lost her life and believe there needs to be greater police visibility and the prioritisation of the safety of communities especially women and children. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must be brought to justice and need to face the full might of the law.”
