The City of Tshwane says 1 500 of its high end defaulting consumers owe the City billions of rand in unpaid municipal bills.

The City of Tshwane has threatened to disconnect defaulting customers as it attempts to recoups millions its owed by residents.

At the start of its Tshwane Ya Tima revenue-collection campaign at the beginning of February 188 residential households were earmarked for disconnection. The residents owed a total of R50 million.

Along with the disconnections, the City also imposed steep fines for meter tampering and illegal connections.

In a social media post on X, the City stipulates which customers are at risk of disconnection.

“All customers whose accounts are in arrears for a period longer than 60 days without a valid payment arrangement beware”, the City says.

In a statement, the City’s MMC for Finance Jacqui Uys, calls for residents to honour their payments in order deliver services.

“As we intensify our revenue-collection campaign, I wish to appeal to residential estate managers to allow City meter readers to do their job and not block access. It is important that we work together but, if necessary, we will use law enforcement,” the MMC says.

“As the MMC for Finance, I want to emphasise that the City needs revenue to deliver services and to honour commitments to creditors such as Eskom and Rand Water.”
