Warning issued for damaging wind and waves in KwaZulu-Natal

The passage of the cut-off low pressure system is expected to result in damaging wind and waves in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow level 4 warning for damaging wind and waves in KwaZulu-Natal.

The warning was issued on Tuesday, 26 September and is valid until Wednesday afternoon, 27 September.

DAMAGING WAVES EXPECTED IN KWAZULU-NATAL

The weather service said the passage of the cut-off low pressure system will result in damaging winds and waves along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal between Port Edward and Richards Bay.

“The strong south to south west winds are expected to range between 35 – 40 OKT and waves are expected to pick up 4 – 5m.

As previously reported by The South African, a strong cut-off low pressure system which developed over the long weekend wreaked havoc and caused significant damage in parts of the country, especially in the Eastern and Western Cape.

Strong damaging winds, torrential rainfall which led to widespread flooding and other adverse weather conditions were observed in parts of the country. Eleven deaths including three children were reported in the Western Cape.

POSSIBLE IMPACTS

  • Damaging waves are expected to result in disruptions of small harbours and/or ports.
  • Risk of dragging anchors and breaking mooring lines.
  • There is a possibility of damage to coastal infrastructure (walkways, pipelines, property, road and rail routes) along longer stretches of coastline.
