Durban police have arrested four suspects for allegedly kidnapping a child for a ritual operation in Durban last Friday. The abduction took place at a playground in Umlazi.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) report, the four suspects, aged between 17 and 79, kidnapped the young girl in Umlazi ahead of the mission to perform a ritual on the victim in Nkandla on Saturday.

SAPS’ provincial spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele revealed that the child’s kidnapping occurred while she was with other kids at Dayal Road sports grounds.

“According to the victim’s friend’s [mother], they were playing at Dayal Road sports ground when an unknown man, who was sitting not far from where they were playing, called them to come nearer and play next to him,” Mbele said via News24.

SAPS added to say the suspects were seen by eyewitnesses during the kidnapping for their ritual mission. A local resident later called the child’s mother to report that an unknown person was seen leaving with her child. The mother was then puzzled because the father of the child was in Malawi.

A case of abduction was swiftly opened at the Brighton Beach police station before a fast search was set in motion.

“After an intensive investigation by the team, the child was found at Q Section in Umlazi. The victim was found unharmed and reunited with her mother,” Mbele said.

“It is further alleged that the suspects were going to leave at 06:30 this morning to Nkandla to perform a ritual with the child.”

The kidnapped child for the ritual performance was soon reunited with her distraught mother. The four suspects will meanwhile take the stand at Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
