Motlanthe rules himself out of returning as Ramaphosa’s replacement

Former President Kgalema Motlanthe said he would not consider a return as caretaker President if called to do so.

ANC Electoral Committee Head, Kgalema Motlanthe, ruled himself out of a return as caretaker President of South Africa should Cyril Ramaphosa step down in the coming days.

MOTLANTHE RULES HIMSELF OUT

Motlanthe served as the third president of the Republic of South Africa from September 2008 to May 2009, filling the gap between Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma.

According to reports, Ramaphosa is under severe pressure after the Section 89 Independent Panel made several adverse findings against him over the Phala Phala scandal.

Motlanthe has been proposed as a potential replacement should Ramaphosa step down. However, the former President made it clear that he would not take up the offer.

Motlanthe spoke to journalists at the ANC’s Headquarters, Luthuli House, on Thursday, 1 December, after a briefing about the process and outcomes of branch nominations for the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The 73-year-old reportedly referred to his generation of politicians as people who have already contributed to top leadership positions, per TimesLive.

“If you have flames and put ash on top of them, you’ve dowsed them. We are ash now; we are not anything but ash,” he said, according to News24. The figurative ash is Motlanthe’s generation.

Motlanthe revealed the ‘Top Six’ contenders in late November. He announced the rest of the potential candidates on Thursday. The top 10 NEC Additional Members List includes:
