Kenny Kunene is ‘in charge’ in the City of Joburg, for now

Patriotic Alliance (PA) Deputy President, Kenny Kunene has been appointed Acting Mayor in the City of Joburg.

Kunene’s appointment is effective from Sunday, 14 May.

KENNY KUNENE APPOINTED ACTING MAYOR IN CITY OF JOBURG

Kunene who is also the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport will be Acting Mayor for two days while Gwamanda is away in Cape Town on government business.

In his letter addressed to Kunene, Gwamanda said: “In my capacity as the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality and on authority vested on me by the Municipal Council, I hereby delegate Councillor Kenny Kunene, member of the mayoral committee of the City of Johannesburg Municipality to act as Executive Mayor for the period between 14 and 15 May 2023.”, African Global News reported.

This week, Al Jama-ah gave the Democratic Alliance caucus leader in the City of Johannesburg, Dr Mpho Phalatse 48 hours to publicly apologise and retract her claims that Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda is a scammer or face legal action.

Gwamanda received 139 votes to become Executive Mayor in the City of Johannesburg defeating Dr Mpho Phalatse and ActionSA’s Funzi Ngobeni following Thapelo Amad’s resignation. 

Phalatse accused Gwamanda of running a ponzi scheme through his iThemba Lama Africa funeral scheme entity.

Al Jama-ah leader Ganief Hendricks accused Phalatse of being a sore loser and trying to defame Gwamanda.
