Kaizer Chiefs are set to release at least five or more players at the end of the current season.

Amakhosi have had a season to forget having only accumulated 36 points from 29 games. The Soweto Giants currently lie 8th in the DStv Premiership with one round of fixtures still to go. A convincing win against Cape Town Spurs this coming weekend will see them finish top eight but anything less with see them fall out. Failure to finish in the top eight will automatically see them out of the MTN8 competition.

The Glamour Boys have not won a trophy in nine seasons despite changing coaches regularly. Before the start of the season, Kaizer Chiefs appointed Molefi Ntseki as their new coach and also brought in close to 10 players. Their campaign never got going, forcing the management to sack Ntseki just weeks into the new job.

Amakhosi are set to bring in a new coach next season as they look to rebuild once again. Five players so far are set to leave Kaizer Chiefs end of the season. Here are some of the names:

Itumeleng Khune

After 25 years at the club, Khune will depart Chiefs this season. The 36-year-old rarely featured this season, but this past weekend, the former Bafana Bafana star was honoured. He played in the last 15 minutes as Amakhosi were held to a goalless draw against Polokwane City. The keeper insisted retirement was not on his mind and vowed to come back stronger in the next campaign.

Sifiso Hlanti

Hlanti has featured 20 times for Amakhosi but failed to make the left-back position his own. The veteran defender signed a one-year deal before the start of the current season but Kaizer Chiefs are unlikely to extend his current contract. As an experienced player, he hasn’t shown leadership in key moments when the club were down and out.

Keagan Dolly

Injuries have halted Dolly’s progress during his three-year stay at Naturena. He only featured seven times for Kaizer Chiefs this season, and it won’t be a surprise if he’s one of the released players. At one point, he served as captain, but the armband has since rotated. Being one of the highest-paid players, it makes more sense that Amakhosi might want to cut their losses.

Jason Gonzalez

Gonzalez has played just 10 matches for Chiefs but fired blanks. Despite the hype, the 24-year-old Colombian has failed to deliver.

Siyethemba Sithebe

The former AmaZulu star has had a mixed campaign. The 31-year-old spent most season on the bench with Edson Castillo and Yusuf Maart preferred in the middle of the park. With Kaizer Chiefs coach changing up his lineup in the second half of the season, Sithebe was called and was one of the forgotten players to impress. He played eight matches since February.
