The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have accused the Department of Justice and Correctional Service of endangering the lives of children.

This follows reports that some mothers have not received child support funds due to their children in recent months.

The party has placed this at the hands of the department, who they have deemed liable for the non-payment of the money to the intended recepients.

In a statement issued out on Friday, the EFF says it’s disgusted at what it terms disregard for children’s lives and rights.

“Since the beginning of 2020, thousands of mothers who depend on the money provided by the fathers of their children through the maintenance court have to go without their funds for maintenance. Even though there is proof that the child support money has been deducted from the father’s salary, the Department has withheld these monies from their rightful beneficiaries, the children,” the statement read.

“The department has been citing technical challenges as their excuse for their ruthless and inhumane actions without a clear indication when these ‘challenges’ will be fixed.”

The party added;

“We live in a country where children are exposed to a lot of suffering and abuse. It is a shame and pity that one of the government Ministries that should be protecting the lives of children should be is contributing to this abuse, instead of ensuring that they are provided for and protected.

“We are in the midst of a global health pandemic, and this means the placing of children and families in a place of financial uncertainty can have a disastrous effect on young lives who need health care, sanitation and food security.”

The party called on Justice Minister Ronald Lamola to intervene and ensure that the department carries out its Constitutional duty.
