The Times reports that Julius Malema claims he was asked by “Zuma’s people” asking the Economic Freedom Fighters to help get rid of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
“Zuma’s people came to me and said: ‘ We don’t want Pravin and we know you guys don’t, so please write to the president so that the president can answer genuinely and honestly so we can create a cloud around Pravin.”
He did not say exactly who approached him, but the Times reports Malema the plan was to have Gordhan fired and arrested because “we can’t have a minister who is facing serious charges”.
Malema says the EFF did not join the plot because “we know they want to finish him off because they want the Treasury so that they can steal the money direct from the Reserve Bank”.
Malema admits that Gordhan is “not the EFF’s favourite” but his party is happy to have “some sense of stability.”
“We have to choose between two devils. One devil is called Pravin and the other devil is called Van Rooyen. Pravin is the better devil and we can live with that devil,” Malema said.
Over the weekend, the Times Reported that there was a plan to arrest Gordhan as part of an investigation dating back to his time as the head of the so-called “SARS rogue unit” which was set up to counter illegal tax related activities. It is being investigated whether Gordhan and the unit breached intelligence laws.
The Presidency denied these claims saying they were the “work of dangerous information peddlers who wish to cause confusion and mayhem”.
