A devastating fire ripped through the 1000-seater auditorium on the Unversity of Johannesburg in the early hours of Monday morning causing around R100 million worth of damage.
Arsonists set alight the Sanlam Auditorium at the Kingsway Campus the early hours of Monday morning. Very little is currently known about the attack with no motive or suspects on investigator’s radar.
Business Day explains:
Arsonists broke into and fire-bombed a 1,000 seat auditorium at UJ’s Auckland Park campus at around 2am. They also destroyed computer laboratories and equipment used for career assessment and guidance, the university said in a statement.
The facilities were to have been used for graduation ceremonies and mid-year assessments. Alternative arrangements were being made.
Some social media users suggested that it might have been student protestors. However, the campus’ Student Representative Council – UJ Kingsway SRC - condemned the malicious damage while other students.
On Facebook, pictures showing the extent of the damage went viral.
