A Johannesburg woman nearly loses her cellphone to a long-fingered passerby but she manages to fight back and prevent the thief from escaping. The security cameras of a nearby establishment captured the incident and the footage eventually made found its way to social media.

According to reports, the incident took place in May and community members helped the woman apprehend the man and handed him over to the police.

In the video clip, which has since gone viral, the woman is taking a stroll up a Johannesburg street lined with several cars. She doesn’t appear to be paying much attention to her surroundings – probably because she’s busy on the cellphone that’s in her hand.

There’s a vehicle driving slowly behind her – very obviously tailing her but she doesn’t seem to notice. Around the 14 second mark – about halfway through the video clip – the would-be robber appears in the frame.

He walks towards the woman and when he’s shoulder to shoulder with her he lunges at her phone and snatches it out of her hand. He knocks into her as he tries to escape, spinning her around. The woman, however, reacts quickly and sets after the robber who is running towards the car that was tailing her.

One of the vehicle’s occupants opens the rear door on the passenger’s side from the inside and the robber tried to enter the car but before he could manage that, the woman slammed the door shut. The robbers’ accomplices sped off immediately when the woman touched the door and abandoned him.

The woman and robber both get up from the floor – they fell after the car rushed away – and the struggle continues. The robber is hobbling and it appears that he was injured when the door slammed shut. This is where the video clip ends.

A News24 report sheds some more light on what unfolded afterwards. Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said community members helped the woman chase down the robber and eventually apprehended him.

The police were summoned to the scene and the suspect was taken to the Booyens police station where he was booked for common robbery.
