The discharge of a firearm near Herzlia Gan-Aviv pre-primary school in Cape Town has left the local community deeply concerned. Parents, teachers, and members of the community are calling for heightened safety measures at Jewish schools.

Intended or accidental?

The Jewish school is unable to determine whether this incident was a deliberate act of harm or an accident. Cape Town police initiated an investigation, piecing together the events that led to this incident. With no arrests made to date, the community anxiously awaits answers.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the firearm discharge incident at the Jewish school was unintentional. Nevertheless, given the prevailing tensions in the Middle East and the intense reactions from South Africans towards it, there are numerous conjectures regarding the possibility of it being deliberate, according to BNN.

Fortunately, the school did not report any injuries as a result of the incident. The ongoing police inquiry is focused on uncovering the factors that led to the discharge, with the aim of preventing any recurrence of such a distressing situation.

Jewish schools compelled to increase security measures

In the wake of the Israel-Hamas war, Herzlia schools, including the Gan-Aviv pre-primary school, ramped up their security measures.

Unsettling incidents, including comments made by a protester donning a Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) T-shirt and demands issued by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Western Cape, had the community on edge. The Jewish schools had no option but to beef up security.

EFF accused Jewish schools

The EFF claimed that the school grooms Herzlia students to serve in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) after they matriculate. This sparked a lot of controversy. Herzlia has refuted these allegations. These events have left the Jewish school community on high alert. The recent incident of a gunshot exacerbated existing tensions and fears.

Last year, the EFF called for Herzlia High to be deregistered claiming that up to 22% of the school’s pupils go to Israel the year after school to join the army, as reported by IOL.

SA’s communities divided

The war between Israel and Hamas has exposed deep divisions in SA, with the government’s unwavering support for the Palestinians coming in for criticism from leaders of the country’s Jewish community, among others, according to the BBC.

Citizens have participated in pro-Palestinian protest marches and pro-Israel marches and rallies around the country.
