There’s no better way to make a living than as a professional footballer. In fact, when these guys check their bank balances at the end of the month, there’s not an ounce of fear. We’re looking at the top 10 highest paid players in the PSL, so we can see what the greatest ‘ballers in South Africa are raking in.

Average salary: What do PSL players get paid?

The SowetanLive calculated that an average salary for a PSL player is between R100 000 – R120 000 per month, making the standard yearly wage a cool R1.2 – R1.5 billion.

Who is the highest earning player in the PSL?

SOUTH AFRICA – Pretoria . 04/01/2018 . Phumlani Ntshangase (Supersport United) and Khama Billiat (Kaizer Chiefs), SuperSport United v Kaizer Chiefs, Lucas Moripe Stadium, Atteridgeville.

That would be Khama Billiat, and by some distance too. The new Kaizer Chiefs acquisition did not come cheap, and those of you who though Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pisto Mosimane was joking when he said he’d have to sell most of his team to keep Billiat, you were wrong.

He makes a whopping R10 million a year after tax, according to Sport24. His monthly wage is R833 333, which is eight times more than the average salary in the league.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one the highest paid players in the world. He earns about R40 million a year with Juventus. We’ll let you decide if Billiat is a quarter of the player CR7 is, though.

Who are the highest paid players in the PSL?

(All figures are based on monthly salaries.)

Itumeleng Khune, Kaizer Chiefs: R480 000

Here’s a name likely to stay on this list until he retires. The Amakhosi shot-stopper has been knocked off the top of the big earners’ table by his new teammate, Khama Billiat. Let’s hope no egos have been damaged.

Teko Modise, Cape Town City – R450,000

The midfield general has enjoyed an illustrious career, and now enjoys his twilight years in the Mother City. He’s said to make R5.5 million a year and spends most of it on his motors.

Anthony Laffor, Mamelodi Sundowns – R380 000

We reported last year that Laffor was one of South Africa’s highest-earning footballers. With the departures of Siphiwe Tshabalala, Ejike Uzoenyi and Steven Pienaar from the PSL, the Sundowns attacker is now one of the league’s top five money-men. Must be nice.

Siyanda Xulu, Maritzburg United – R350 000

The man who recently captained Bafana Bafana has put a nightmare spell at Kaizer Chiefs behind him, and turned in some very impressive performances with Maritzburg United since 2017. Now he’s got a long-term contract in place, Xulu’s making it rain in KZN.

Elias “Domingues” Pelembe, Bidvest Wits – R320 000

The Clever Boys are looking top of the class again after a fantastic start to the 2018/19 season. Domingues can’t complain, as he’s being handsomely rewarded for his combative midfield performances.

Bernard Parker, Kaizer Chiefs – R300 000

The much-maligned striker hasn’t had a great time of it with the Glamour Boys lately. He may be out of form, but his current deal means he certainly isn’t out of pocket.

Dean Furman, SuperSport United – R300 000

It seems like football players are treated like fine wines these days. With age, comes the big bucks. Pelembe, Khune, Modise and Parker are all aged over 30. This Cape Town-born midfielder reached the big 3-0 himself back in June, and he wouldn’t have been short of resources for throwing a cracking party.

Oupa Manyisa, Mamelodi Sundowns – R250 000

He made the switch from Pirates to Sundowns last winter and had a steady enough season for the Brazilians. However, his healthy bank balance was rumoured to be a bone of contention for his teammates.

George Lebese, Mamelodi Sundowns – R250 000

They were both unveiled as a double-signing for the PSL champions back in August 2017. It seems they printed one contract off for the pair of them, as Lebese also rakes in a quarter-of-a-million per month.
