The professional rally driver Ken Block, whose daring stunts made him an internet sensation, died in a snowmobile accident.

KEN BLOCK DIED ON MONDAY IN A SNOWMOBILE ACCIDENT

The snowmobile accident happened on Monday, 2 January 2023, at approximately 14:00 in Wasatch County, Utah. Ken was 55 years old.

The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office said the Wasatch County 911 Center received a call reporting a snowmobile accident in the Mill Hollow area.

“Search and Rescue, along with law enforcement from Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office, Utah State Parks, and the US Forest Service, responded.

“The driver, Kenneth Block, a 55-year-old male out of Park City, Utah, was riding a snowmobile on a steep slope when the snowmobile upended, landing on top of him. He was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.”

His team Hoonigan Racing confirmed the devasting news in a statement on Instagram.

HIS TEAM CONFIRMED THE DEVASTING NEWS

“Ken was a visionary, a pioneer, and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband. He will be incredibly missed,” it said.

Ken was named Rookie of the Year in the Rally America Championship as he began his rallying career in 2005. 

He competed in the World Rally Championship and won several rallycross medals at the X Games.

The American also cofounded the sportswear company DC Shoes and produced the Gymkhana video series, which featured him driving on dangerous tracks and obstacle courses. The series racked up millions of views on YouTube.

The world of motorsport has paid tribute to Ken since the confirmation of his death.

‘KEN BLOCK WAS A VISIONARY, A PIONEER, AND AN ICON’

Ken’s friend and fellow drift merchant Vaughn Gittin Jr described him as a badass dad and a constant inspiration. 

“I will forever cherish the almost 20 years of friendship and fun all over the world we shared, enjoying our passions. I will forever be grateful for the constant inspiration, opportunities, and advice that you offered. Thank you for what you brought to the world that created so many smiles and inspired masses, all while being a bad ass Dad. Love and respect to the entire Block family.”

Jari-Matti Latvala, a Finnish rally driver who has competed in the World Rally Championship, said Ken’s death is a big loss for the Motorsport world.

THE WORLD OF MOTORSPORT HAS PAID TRIBUTE

“He brought a new audience to the rally sphere and was making our sport famous in the USA.

“When I got the news, I couldn’t believe it, but I guess many others had the same feeling. It’s shocking and shows how fragile human life can be.

“We were teammates with Ken in the Ford WRC Team, in the past, for several years. What I remember from this great time was that he was very humble and a real professional who always wanted to learn more. 

“We have lost a super person, but his achievements will live forever! Rest in peace, Legend.”
