A group of 22 South Africans is stranded on a boat in Egypt after leaving war-torn Sudan.

THE GROUP OF 22 ARRIVED FOR A PROJECT LAST YEAR

According to a report by News24, Gift of the Givers’ Dr Imtiaz Sooliman said the group had arrived for a project last year. The boat was chartered by the company which employed them.

It is believed they have been on the boat in Port Safaga for the last three days awaiting clearance.

IT IS BELIEVED THEY HAVE BEEN ON A BOAT FOR THE LAST THREE DAYS AWAITING CLEARANCE

Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) spokesperson Clayson Monyela said the department would intervene in getting the required clearances.

“We are, however, glad that the group is out of Sudan and not in harm’s way,”

he said.

This comes after ten South Africans stuck in conflict-torn Sudan arrived safely and sound at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Saturday evening.

FIFTY-THREE EVACUEES LANDED IN SOUTH AFRICA ON SUNDAY

Fifty-three evacuees landed at OR Tambo International Airport from Egypt on Sunday – after being trapped in conflict-ridden Sudan for two weeks – without access to water, electricity, or food.

Meanwhile, a top United Nations humanitarian official is heading to the conflict-stricken region due to the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis.

THEY HAVE BEEN TRAPPED IN CONFLICT-RIDDEN SUDAN FOR TWO WEEKS

This comes as the conflict is now impacting Sudan’s food supply.

“Fuel scarcity is affecting the food supply in Khartoum, and the clashes have forced factories and bakeries to cease operations,” said Al Jazeera’s Haitham Uweit, reporting from Khartoum.

“Groups are trying to provide food but they are just small initiatives,” he added.

THE CONFLICT IS NOW IMPACTING SUDAN’S FOOD SUPPLY

Earlier on Monday, the World Food Programme (WFP) lifted its suspension of operations in the country. It ceased operations last month after three of its workers were killed.

More than 500 people have been killed, and tens of thousands of people have fled since battles erupted last month.
