Good news for Gautrain commuters as services have now been fully restored after being disrupted by a power failure on Tuesday afternoon, 9 November 2021.

The outage resulted in 47 passengers being stuck in the dark under the Sandton tunnel. The train service between Park Station, Midrand and the Airport service were affected by the power failure.

Gautrain bus services had to transport customers between Marlboro and Sandton, as well OR Tambo.

GAUTRAIN: LOAD SHEDDING NOT CAUSE OF DISRUPTION

Bombela, the company which operates the Gautrain, has clarified that load shedding was not the cause of the trains being stuck, but instead, the train had experienced a power failure.

Gautrain spokesperson Kesagee Nayager says the power failure was caused by a damaged overhead powerline which technicians were working to repair.

“47 passengers were aboard one of the trains that was stranded for approximately 90 minutes.Three other trains were also halted by the power failure, but passengers aboard these trains were evacuated shortly thereafter as these trains were in close proximity to the stations”

The power failure disrupted service on parts of North-South and East-West lines of the Gautrain.

Many were quick to assume the incident was a result of load shedding, particularly because South Africans had been putting up with stage 4 of the rolling blackouts since Monday afternoon.
