Gauteng Health Department launches free first responder training to equip communities with skills such as CPR to respond to emergencies.

Gauteng Health Department launches free first responder training to equip communities with skills such as CPR to respond to commonly encountered emergencies.

FREE FIRST RESPONDER TRAINING FOR COMMUNITIES

Out of the 175 913 calls received by the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services’ Communication Centre between December 2022 and February 2023, there was an average of 31 180 medical incidents.

Of these, 6 955 were trauma incidents, 2 391 accidents, and 1 037 suicide incidents monthly. In over 90% of the incidents, communities were less equipped to respond to the emergency they were confronted with.

Knowing CPR can mean the difference between life and death while awaiting emergency response teams, states the Gauteng Health Department.

GAUTENG HEALTH GIVES COMMUNITIES FREE CPR TRAINING

To equip communities with the required skills to respond to commonly encountered emergencies, the department will, this morning, Wednesday, 08 March 2023, launch the free First Responder Training offered by Lebone College of Emergency Care.

The Gauteng Health Department says the free training programme will focus on performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on victims. They will also learn how to assist victims with convulsions and critical wounds such as stab and gunshot wounds. These victims fell from heights, victims with sprains and strains, drowning victims, and victims with burns.

This Programme is intended for the TISH communities (townships, informal settlements, and hostels) with always challenges. Challenges include access which results in emergency responses sometimes being delayed.

The Gauteng Health Department will run the First Responder training from March to December 2023 across the province to train 2 500 individuals how to do CPR during this period.
