Four teenagers shot in gang-related incident on Youth Day in Mitchells Plain

Three victims – aged 14, 16 and 46 – died at the scene, and two others were injured. Police arrested one suspect and are searching for two more.

Five people, including four teenagers, were shot in Lentegeur Mitchells Plain on Friday night, 16 June. Three of the victims died at the scene, and two others were rushed to hospital.

MITCHELLS PLAIN MASS SHOOTING ON FRIDAY

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said a 26-year-old suspect had been arrested in connection with the mass shooting, and the hunt is on for two more suspects.

“Police reports indicate that the suspects entered a house in Poppy Street, Lentegeur and fired multiple shots. Three victims aged 14, 16 and 46 died as a result,” said Potelwa.

Two more teens – aged 15 and 18 – sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were transported to a nearby medical facility. The suspects fled the scene.

“As part of the investigation, the 26-year-old was apprehended. Two other suspects are still being sought,” said the police spokesperson.

Anti-Gang Unit detectives believe the shooting incident is gang-related and are investigating three counts of murder and two attempted murders.

In an unrelated incident at the start of June, four young men were shot dead in separate drive-by shootings that took place 10 minutes apart in Manenberg and Surrey Estate, Cape Town.
