Free State: Woman kills boyfri

Authorities in Free State have slammed ‘the prevailing culture of violence‘ perpetuated by liquor in the province, after a young woman allegedly murdered her boyfriend during a row about alcohol consumption.

Smithfield stabbing: Alcohol blamed for violent attack

According to the regional police, the suspect stabbed her partner in the chest with a kitchen knife. He was pronounced dead at the scene when first responders arrived at the farm in Smithfield, and the 22-year-old woman was arrested.

Provincial Commissioner Baile Motswenyane echoed the sentiments of Bheki Cele, and condemned the influence alcohol can have on violent crimes. This case is in itself peculiar, given that a female suspect has violently attacked a male victim. But General Motswenyane believes that drinking was the major catalyst here:

Full statement on the incident from Free State Police

“A 22-year-old female suspect was arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing her boyfriend at a farm near Smithfield in the Free State. After an argument ensued over drinks, the suspect took a knife from the cupboard drawer and stabbed the deceased in the chest. His body was found lying in a pool of blood with one stab wound to the chest.”

“Medics pronounced the man dead on arrival. The Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Baile Motswenyane, says her department is ‘very concerned’ about the prevailing violence of people while under the influence of liquor. We urge our people to socialise without any violent behaviour, as eventually, someone has to pay with his or her own life.”
