A 71-year-old father and his 11-year-old son were shot and wounded in a house robbery during the early hours of Saturday, 26 March. Both later died of their injuries.

FATHER AND SON KILLED IN HOUSE ROBBERY

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said Ben Plaatjies and his son Ken were asleep in their home in Madikeni Township in Dunbrody, Gqeberha when there was a knock at the door at approximately 2:45.

Ben opened the door and was met by four men and a woman who levelled a firearm at him. The group told him they were police officers before handcuffing him. The police said it is unclear what was stolen from the house.

“The owner sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Detectives are still probing the circumstances relating to the 11-year-old’s shooting. He also sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Both injured victims were taken to hospital for medical attention,” said the police spokesperson.

The vehicle used by the suspects – a white VW Polo – was recovered by K9 Unit members at a house in Kwadesi on Saturday morning, said Naidu. It is also alleged that the suspects were clad in police uniforms.

The wounded father and son succumbed to their gunshot injuries on Sunday.

The Kirkwood police station’s detectives are now investigating two cases of murder and a house robbery.

Members of the public with information that may assist police in their investigation are encouraged to contact Detective Captain Freddie Moss on 082-319-9227 or call Crime Stop at 08600-10111.
