The Western Cape Department of Education has confirmed that a fatal school shooting has taken place at Middelpos Primary School in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.
One female school teacher was shot by a male perpetrator who is believed to be her ex-spouse. The attacker then reportedly turned the gun on himself.
Both succumbed to their wounds.
The department has confirmed that the incident took place in front of learners from the school. Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schafer says the learners, as well as the teacher’s daughters, have been left “greatly traumatised”.
“I wish to express my shock and sadness at the fatal shooting of a teacher from Middelpos Primary School in Saldanha Bay this morning (Wednesday 11th April 2018).”
I am deeply disturbed by the unspeakably tragic incident. My heartfelt condolences go to the teacher’s family, friends and the school community.
Schafer confirmed that officials from the department and Safe School officials have also been immediately dispatched to the school.
“The school has made the decision to dismiss learners early and a school psychologist and social worker will be dispatched to provide counselling for those who are in need of assistance, or witnessed the event.”
Educators from Middelpos Primary as well as the neighbouring school, Diazville Primary School have also been left traumatised by the incident. The department has said that counselling and support will be provided.
