The City of Joburg’s MMC for Public Safety Mally Mokoena has reacted to the attack of a female metro police officer, denouncing the incident and calling for the suspect to be brought to book.

“I strongly condemn this heinous act. Such behaviour is abhorrent and simply unacceptable. Our officers should never be placed in harm’s way while carrying out their duties, especially by wayward scoundrels like this man who have no regard for the law,” Mokoena said.

The officer had been trying to apprehend a motorist at Eloff Street extension in the south of Joburg on Saturday evening. The man had disregarded red traffic lights and nearly bumped into the JMPD officer’s patrol vehicle.

The officer managed to move the car to a safer position, then stepped out and instructed the driver, to wait as she called for backup. As she walked back to her vehicle, he attacked her from behind, strangling then kicking her in the face.

Mokoena has described the attack as sickening, particularly given the country’s history with gender-based violence.

“This incident is extremely sickening in a country that is confronted with the plague of violence against women and children. It is absolutely contemptible to have our officer subjected to such wanton physical and verbal abuse while doing her job,”

“An e-hailing driver and a lady client stopped to assist the officer as they realised that the situation was extremely serious. They shouted telling the male to leave the officer, and when he saw them, he said that the officer was the one assaulting him. They told him that they witnessed everything and that he is not the victim,” said Joburg Metro Police spokesperson Xolani Fihla.

The officer was taken to Milpark Hospital with injuries on her head, face, left eye and right shoulder and was discharged the same evening after getting treatment.

“I wish to extend my gratitude to everyone who intervened during the attack, especially Fidelity ADT security personnel. We appreciate your spirit of altruism and ubuntu. I wish the officer a speedy recovery and assure her that she will receive all the necessary support from the department throughout her recuperation and court proceedings,” Mokoena added.
