Minister Mchunu tackles eThekwini water challenges swiftly, prioritising communities facing pressing issues in water and sanitation.

Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, actively addresses the pressing water supply challenges in eThekwini. These challenges confront communities in Othongathi, Phoenix, and Verulam within the City of eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal.

In ongoing engagements with the municipality, Minister Mchunu seeks lasting solutions. The aim is to fully restore water access and ensure a reliable supply for residents.

What did Minister Mchunu have to say?

“For some time as Water and Sanitation, we have been aware of the water challenges in the areas of Othongathi, Phoenix and Verulam and we have been engaging with eThekwini to urgently find solutions to address the situation. We are however deeply concerned that the heavy rainstorms that are continuously battering parts of the province and cause massive damage to infrastructure, including that of water, have exacerbated the situation.

“eThekwini Metro is a Water Services Authority, mandated by the Constitution and designated to provide water services to its residents and we trust they should live up to their responsibility. We urge the municipality to act with urgency and decisively, even if it means they must work day and night, to resolve the matter and ensure that services are fully restored to the communities affected,” said Minister Mchunu.

Highlighting collaboration, Minister Mchunu announces that the Department of Water and Sanitation, together with uMngeni-uThukela Water, is ready to provide urgent assistance. This underscores their commitment to addressing the pressing water supply challenges.

Engineers and technicians are actively working on-site to identify and repair damaged water infrastructure resulting from recent floods. This comprehensive process aims to restore water services in all affected areas.

Minister Mchunu apologises for eThekwini water scarcity
