EThekwini Municipality issued a statement last month urgently urging residents in the eThekwini region to disconnect static tanks, commonly known as Jojo tanks, from the municipal reticulation system.

The city emphasised rainwater harvesting using Jojo tanks as a practical alternative for additional water storage.

As highlighted in the statement, the upsurge in Jojo tank installations, notably in Phoenix’s northern areas, has led to persistent water outages. The increasing number of Jojo tanks in residential homes particularly impacts the Phoenix 2 Reservoir Zone.

City aims for equitable water distribution

The eThekwini Municipality statement outlined the adverse effects of this Jojo tank trend: “An uneven distribution of the available water supply among residents occurs as Jojo tanks fill up. Some families experience intermittent or no water supply, while the reservoir accumulates storage. To address this issue and ensure equitable water distribution, the City called upon residents to disconnect their Jojo tanks from the municipal water reticulation network.”

The statement also warned that without cooperation, the City may resort to drastic measures. Such as installing restrictors on properties with Jojo tanks to limit water consumption and storage.

Approximately 70 percent of properties with Jojo tanks draw water from the Phoenix 2 Reservoir Zone, adding strain to the city’s water resources.
